Is the ‘rematch clause’ with Mosley a ‘smart business decision’ or a ‘sign of fear’ for Floyd Jr

Just recently, the spotlight has been shined on the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr had a rematch clause put into his fight contract with Shane Mosley. Shane’s camp says that Mayweather did it to protect himself. Mayweather’s camp says it was a smart business decision. Let’s examine further.

Smart Business Decision

"It was only put in there [by Mayweather's manager] because it's good business, Floyd didn't even know it was there until later," Leonard Ellerbe, LA Times.

First, I don’t believe for one second that Mayweather Jr didn’t know it was put in there. It was probably his idea. Second, I do agree that it is smart business. Here are a few reasons why:

If Mayweather loses, then it gives him a chance to avenge his first loss.
It’s a guarantee to big money for 2 fights. We all know how Mayweather loves and needs his money.
It does protect Mayweather Jr from any unforeseen circumstances which Ellerbe also shared with the LA Times.

"There could be a cut, a slip, a head butt, a no-contest called," Ellerbe said. "Those things have happened before in boxing. If they do, we're covered. We'll get another fight. That's the only reason it was put in there, not because Floyd was thinking about a loss. He didn't even know it was in there until we told him." Leonard Ellerbe

A sign of fear

Now there are many Floyd critics who say that the immediate rematch clause is a sign that Mayweather is afraid of Mosley. This is possibly true but we will never know because Mayweather will never say so. However, with Mayweather’s history of “ducking” and “running, his critics have some serious ammunition for their claims that Mayweather is afraid of Mosley.

How many of Mayweather’s previous fights had immediate rematch clauses? I can’t remember there being much hype about any immediate rematch clauses for Floyd.

Conclusion

Mikey Jones Sacramento, CA “Did Floyd add the immediate rematch clause because he thinks he will lose to Mosley?

Honestly, I think it’s a little bit of smart business and a little bit of fear. Mosley does have the best chance of beating Mayweather than anyone else Floyd has faced in a long time. Mosley is a HOF boxer who will come to fight. On the other hand, anything can happen in a big time fight. So, an immediate rematch clause is smart business too.
